I like to think of myself as a writer for that’s what I spend most of my time doing. I’ve pretty well had a go at every sort of writing, editing newsletters on human rights issues and self determination, writing on food issues, on travel, on death and dying, and am now having a bash at picture books for [...]

Anyway, the reason I mention Jobs is because he once said that ‘it is only by looking backwards that we can connect the dots’. I’ve said that a few times this month, a month in which my feet have hardly touched the ground. Looking back at October, and at all the things I have done, I lay in bed this morning, reflecting on the month, and, as always, looking for the theme about which I would write to you. When I am helping my students and mentees to write I often find myself reminding them that whatever they write must have a point. It must have a purpose, a reason to live. The world has to be a better place for having those words in it. I believe that poets have to be wise. They have to be insightful and to be able to write words that resonate or provoke. Pip writes of dark subjects such as suicide, poverty and self-harming. Cooper Clarke writes about hire cars, streets and shirts. Every poem deserves to be there. [...]

Today, I’m going to re-remind you that one and add another – new books. When a book is freshly published its appearance makes good news. Not only could you write a book review, but you could also interview the author or write a feature based on the premise of the book and interview the author and mention the book in the [...]

Melinda Roos
I love it when my students have something to teach me and yesterday was no exception. Melinda Roos was attending my Definite Articles workshop in the Hague, and was thrilled to announce that she had just had an article accepted by a website called Suite101. Well, I had never heard of it! But [...]
