When I am helping my students and mentees to write I often find myself reminding them that whatever they write must have a point. It must have a purpose, a reason to live. The world has to be a better place for having those words in it. I believe that poets have to be wise. They have to be insightful and to be able to write words that resonate or provoke. When you are a new writer you are unlikely to have the networks you need. I have a network of over 5000 in my address book and have the contact details of people who are an authority on every topic about which I write. I’m not simply ‘lucky’ though. No, I have built this network easily and quickly, by attending the best conferences I can and where experts give workshops and keynotes on the topics about which I am passionate. I take copious notes while these gurus are speaking and focus on what I call quote spotting. Yes, I collect the quotes these people say, make a note of who said this and when and where and then use them in my [...] October 14th, 2010 | Tags: article, authority, conference, contact, definite articles, expert, guru, interview, journalist, Kristin Engvig, network, Paris, press, quote, win, write | Category: articles, writing | One comment

I first ‘met’ Debbie Nicol before the summer, when I was invited to drop in on the Dubai-based, Flamingo Writers’ Circle meeting via Skype. So there I was, sitting at the same table as the other writers, only I was there virtually, on a computer screen! It was amazingly effective. After that session I fixed [...] October 12th, 2010 | Tags: Australia, book, corporate, Debbie Nicol, Dubai, embers, hardback, inspiration, interview, of the world, publish | Category: books, interviews & new releases | Leave a comment

One of the first things that I teach the students attending my book-writing workshops is that they need to have the authority to write about their chosen topic. I say they need to have ‘been there, done that and got the [...] October 4th, 2010 | Tags: author, book, career, expat, harpercollins, interview, job, overseas, perry yeatman, stacie berden, woman, women | Category: books, expatriate stuff, interviews & new releases | One comment

I am always thrilled when I discover a new publishing concept. And last week I met Karen Joubert and Monica Vaccari, who devised the concept for the My The Hague photobook. With Karen in charge of text and Monica in charge of images, the pair of expat wives put together a simply beautiful book of [...] September 30th, 2010 | Tags: author, Blurb, book, clever, color, colour, expat, gift, interview, Karen Joubert, Monica Vaccari, My The Hague, photo, present, print on demand, question | Category: books, interviews & new releases | One comment
