Since July I have been actively contacting a whole host of online publications to see if they would like articles from me. I have been writing many every month as a result and it has made a massive difference to my business, with booksales and enquiries increasing daily.
Today, I had a piece published in Maastricht’s [...]

It is hard to write about pets in a convincing way. It can be easier to be corny than to be compelling. Loving our pets unconditionally and totally as we do, it is particularly hard to write about them sensitively and yet objectively, particularly when they are [...]

I am a lazy writer. There I said it. In fact, one of the reasons I made a career out of writing was because I could get away with what I call researchless writing. I admit that I write about what I know and where I’ve been and what I’ve done because it meant I did not have to do much extra research before I had a passable article or book written. Sure, I would speak to some experts and interview a few people to case study, but by and large I could write from personal [...]

It’s not often that a piece of writing strikes me as exceptional. But when I do I always mark it the text I am reading and commit the crime of folding over the corner of the page. A piece of writing has to be particularly fine if I then go the length of carrying the book with me to read out to people (anyone who will listen actually) and off the scale if I take the final step and type it up to circulate to those outside my immediate reach. Many of my students find it hard to let go of their work and send it out into the universe. Pressing the Publish button on your blog, sending that proposal out to a publisher, or emailing that pitch to a magazine editor can be tough.
If you procrastinate about letting go then read my column at The Hague Online this month about why letting go is a good [...]

why authors, and indeed, entrepreneurs, need to get interviewed as much as possible by the media. This gets you much-needed publicity. And, may I add – it is [...]

I just wrote this piece about how to write life story for Cyprus Mail. It includes examples of the different ways you could tackle writing your own memoir if you too, like me, live abroad and just know your experiences have value and can help other people.

3) Go ‘quote spotting’. People love to talk about themselves, but sadly, in my experience, about 60% of what they say will not be usable in your article. So keep alert for the good things they say. The really good quotes. If you conduct an interview live, rather than by email, only write down the insightful or fascinating answers. Take your time, write those quotes carefully and [...]
