Authors need to get publicity and lots of it, every which way, all the time. So, when Andrea Martins of ExpatWomen.com asked if she could interview me about my new online program, called Definite Articles: how to write and sell winning articles based on your overseas experience I jumped at the chance. As the program [...]

Today, I’m going to re-remind you that one and add another – new books. When a book is freshly published its appearance makes good news. Not only could you write a book review, but you could also interview the author or write a feature based on the premise of the book and interview the author and mention the book in the [...]

Melinda Roos
I love it when my students have something to teach me and yesterday was no exception. Melinda Roos was attending my Definite Articles workshop in the Hague, and was thrilled to announce that she had just had an article accepted by a website called Suite101. Well, I had never heard of it! But [...]

When you are a new writer you are unlikely to have the networks you need. I have a network of over 5000 in my address book and have the contact details of people who are an authority on every topic about which I write. I’m not simply ‘lucky’ though. Our writing goals can often seem too far away, too difficult, impossible even, and so we hover in the foothills of our dreams, shuffling papers and feet and procrastinating. I believe that writing articles should be your first step towards your writing dreams, yes, even (or especially) if your actual goal is to write a full-length book. Articles are shorter, easier to place and a great way to build your portfolio and your [...]

One of the best ways to get publicity for yourself, your product and your book (and yes you need this way before it is finished and sent to press) is to get media coverage. A good piece of editorial can go a long way and when you consider how many people view that website, listen to that radio station, buy that paper/magazine or borrow it from the library the exposure one little article can get you is [...]

Last month I was in Dubai and led just a two hour workshop for writers, which I called Pitch Perfect. One of those students was Kristina Aaronson, and today, her first piece is published in the Weekly Telegraph. That really is amazingly quick. To make the pitch, sell it and for it to appear [...]
